EASTERN ESCAPADE – 4 days/3 nights - People, animals and scenery galore
Drive through contrasting dry, flat and arid lands to volcanoes and lush green valleys. Spend the night in a National Park and check out the wildlife and abundance of birds. Along the way, see camels and the Afar people with their distinct Afro hairstyles. The walled city of Harar is only 1 sq km but has 99 Mosques. Next to Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem, Harar is regarded as one of the Holiest cities of the Muslim world. Whitewashed walls and cobbled paths lead to traders of many goods including spice, coffee, needle and canework and beautiful bright fabrics making interesting photography. In the evening, there’s a man feeding hyenas. You may wish to visit the Harar beer factory. Soak in hot mineral pools before returning to Addis.
TRIBAL AFFAIRS –7 day/6 night – Tribes, culture and nature - 28 April to 4 May
There are more than 80 Ethnic Groups in Ethiopia, and more than 120 dialects. In the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia, it’s easy to see many tribes in just a few days. It’s an amazing experience to visit some of the tribes in their own villages and to wander amongst them on Market Days. It’s colourful, interesting and intriguing. Stay the night in traditional woven bamboo huts (up to 12m high) in Dorze Village (3000m above sea leavel). See locals spinning and weaving cotton. Along the road check out the stalls with brightly coloured hats, scarves and traditional white cotton wraps (shama and gabi).
